Janice travels north for the Friday matinee

The Johnny wrestling team travels north to face Itasca CC this Friday, January 27th in Grand Rapids at 1 p.m.

A look at Johnny’s: Two St. John’s wrestlers – juniors Ben Gilbertson (Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice) and Hayden Lemons (St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael Albertville) – The Johnnies finished second at the annual North Country Open last Sunday (Jan. 22) at Sexton Arena. The tournament featured 125 wrestlers from three NCAA divisions and junior college.

Gilbertson opened his day with a 25-6 technical fall at 184 pounds and defeated Brett Graham of Division II MSU-Moorhead 5-4 in the semifinals before falling to Bryce Fitzpatrick of Division II St. Cloud State 4-1. Score in finals. He now has a team-leading 12 wins (12-8 record) this season.

In the silver bracket at 174 pounds, Lemonds posted a 7-5 decision in his first-round match and pinned Wayne Mellon of MSU-Moorhead to reach the finals, where he lost 7-5 to Sebastian Zamorano of St. Cloud State. .

Possible order of SJU: Johnny’s is scheduled to send eight of these Johnny’s to Grand Rapids Friday.
