Frontex and France are running a pilot program to ease cross-border travel

Frontex is implementing a technical pilot project in collaboration with the French Ministry of the Interior. The project invites volunteers to answer a standard border control questionnaire before or during a ferry trip to the port of Saint-Malo in France.

Intended participants are non-EU citizens coming to the EU for a short stay. The website is being used to test the impact of self-check-in on overall processing times and the potential of a self-service mobile application for further improvements in border control.

During the project, Frontex collects feedback from participants to better understand their expectations and improve the tool. The outcome and lessons learned from this project, as well as the website, will be made available to the European Commission and Member States should they wish to use this tool in the future.

Member States are currently preparing to implement the entry-exit system, which will introduce changes to the process at the border for many travelers. The new system will provide opportunities for greater use of automated or self-service tools, which will improve the travel experience and help speed up transit.
